Here we are with the first update of the year!
This month we kept collecting feedbacks from the first backers who have already received their Goliath. They are helping us to understand which are the most urgent areas of improvement from a software perspective.
We are so happy to receive the images of their projects too and we can’t wait to see more and more projects made with Goliath all round the world.
In this update we will tell more about software improvements, assembly and production status and timeline.
Slingshot updates
These are the features and changes updated in the current version:
Added
- notification system so you will be updated as soon as a new Slingshot release is online
- new way to run the panel detection: now you can manually input the size of the work area
- possibility to add/edit saved bits in the settings bit list
Fixed
- tabs no longer disappear when zoom level changes with more than one track selected
- bugs with an impact on the final quality of the cut
Changed
- the height of the tabs is now higher, to make them more stable and avoid the cut part detaches from the panel
New panel detection mode
Thanks to the feedbacks received in the latest months, we understood that an important area of improvement in the user experience of the Goliath System was the panel detection phase. For this reason, from the last version of Slingshot, there are two options to conduct this setup:
- Using the tower sensors to define the work area (let’s define this the “classic” mode)
- Manually input the size of the work area (the new one)
This new mode is suitable for regular work areas. You firstly have to screw the sensors to the panel, then manually type the dimension of the sides of the work area, then connect the yellow sensor (#1) to Goliath, the grey sensor (#2) to sensor #1, save the measure between sensors and then hook it to Goliath. The following steps are the same of the classic mode.

Next developments
Our software developer is working on the next release which will be online next week.
In this upcoming version, we are working to speed up the import phase and solve the issues with large files or files with many paths.
Moreover, the Gcode will be calculated only at the end, when the user has finished modifying the project. The goal is to make the import process smoother and more efficient.
MAC and Linux OS
During the last weeks, we tested a few short-term solutions with a Mac OS and we verified that Slingshot works well with Virtual Box. This could be a free momentary solution also for Linux users. Moreover, Slingshot works also with Parallel.
Assembly and production
Starting from November, the new Supply Chain Manager joined the Springa team. He is contributing in improving the working method, making the operational flow more efficient.
Thanks to this new competencies in December and January we updated the order plan for the production of the future batches meant for you, backers.
In the meantime, we also made an inventory of our warehouse to sort out the orders for the components needed to start the assembly phase of the next batch:
- Some components, such as the spindles, are ready in stock
- Some components have been ordered: next week some of them are going to arrive so we can start pre-assembly them. These include motors, bearings, encoders, and other parts.
- Other components, on the other hand, have been ordered but we have to delay their arrival in order to manage the space we have available in our warehouse and on the production lines
Test bench
Since the end of last year, we have also started working on a complex but very useful task: to save time on the test procedures at the end of the assembly line, so we worked on the development of a test bench.
It is a rotating platform that allows us to test all the features of Goliath before we mount the shells. In this way, we can have guarantees on the general functioning of Goliath and on the calibration of the encoder.
Thanks to this system, we can test the vacuum system, the spindle, the z-axis, the motors, the quality of the encoder assembly.
All data is then recorded, on order to collect an insight into all the fundamental behaviors of each Goliath.
This bench will be implemented on the assembly line and will let us make the Goliath functional test procedure automatic, allowing us to work quickly and efficiently!
Timeline
Due to some factors, we had to re-establish the timeline we planned last month:
- In China and the closures of some companies for the Chinese New Year, the production of some components has slowed down. We, therefore, ordered the components with the longest waiting times so that they will arrive on time
- Our current production capacity takes longer to assemble, test, and ship all the Goliaths to our backers. The solution to this matter is that we will proceed to an assembly divided by lots
For these reasons, we estimate to begin the assembly of the first 200 units in April 2021.
Shipments & Availability
Giving priority to the shipments of our backers, we estimate that Goliath will be available for sale starting from this summer.
We are considering opening a pre-order list, so we can manage in a better way the orders.
